Students build affordable home with materials donated by Beisser Lumber
Hammers and saws echoed through an Ames neighborhood as about a dozen workers swarmed around the foundation of a new home under construction at 620 12th St.
Students from Des Moines Area Community College’s Career Academy, Hunziker Center, were busy nailing up stud walls in the basement and cutting and measuring floor joists.
Chuck Abbott stated “We’ve worked with DMACC before, but not for the last three or four years,”. He said the students would build the home, including the framing, interior work and roofing.“The city will require us to use licensed trades for the utilities — electrical, plumbing and heating — but the students will do the rest,” Abbott said. “And they don’t get paid, except for the experience they get. It certainly helps our budget.”
Richard Webb, SCCHC executive director, said after the two-bedroom, single-bathroom home is finished next spring, it will be offered for sale to a family of three or four members who earn an annual income of between $45,000 and $55,000.
DMACC teacher Joe Berends said the students also work in two other shifts from 7 to 9:30 a.m. and from 10 a.m. to noon. “There’s classroom work, but this is 90 percent a hands-on experience,” he said.
Abbott said the home will cover 1,100 square feet on the main floor. Because it has a foam and concrete foundation that offers an R-20 rating and is equipped with “egress windows” to meet city code, the basement can be used as living space too.

Extreme Makeover
In December 2005 the Kibe family lost their home due to a fire. Since then the family had been living in a one-bedroom camper on their Tama County farm while trying to get an insurance settlement and a loan to rebuild their home.
On September 10, 2006, Ty Pennington of the hit ABC-TV show "Extreme Makeover: Home Edition woke up Shawn and Amy Kibe and their three sons to inform them they had been selected as the next family to have a custom home built. The family spent a week on a Caribbean cruise while Pennington’s crew and thousands of corporate volunteers built their new home.
On September 17th, after only one week, Ty Pennington and the crew revealed a beautiful two story house to the Kibe family.
Several Iowa companies helped in rebuilding the Kibe home: Hubbell
Homes, McAninch Corp., Beisser Lumber Co., Adams Door Co., Atlas
Construction Services, Cessford Construction, Flooring Gallery, and
Soil-tek.
Beisser Lumber was proud to be a part of the ABC-TV show “Extreme Makeover: Home Edition”
The episode "Kibe Family" aired on October 29th at 7:00PM CST.
